What is Nutrition Journal?

Nutrition Journal is an open access, peer-reviewed, online journal that considers manuscripts within the field of human nutrition. Animal studies are not published.

Nutrition Journal aims to encourage scientists and physicians of all fields to publish results that challenge current models, tenets or dogmas. The journal invites scientists and physicians to submit work that illustrates how commonly used methods and techniques are unsuitable for studying a particular phenomenon. Nutrition Journal strongly promotes and invites the publication of clinical trials that fall short of demonstrating an improvement over current treatments. The aim of the journal is to provide scientists and physicians with responsible and balanced information in order to improve experimental designs and clinical decisions.

With the advent of the Internet, has dawned a new way to exchange information and to publish biomedical journals. BioMed Central has been a pioneer in online publishing with Nutrition Journal being one of its many journals. Publication in Nutrition Journal offers many advantages over traditional paper publications; the journal offers free access to its articles; high quality and rapid peer-review; immediate publication; and most importantly, universal access to its content from virtually any place in the world.

Content overview

Nutrition Journal considers the following types of articles:

  • Research - reports of data from original research.
  • Case reports - reports of clinical cases that can be educational, describe a diagnostic or therapeutic dilemma, suggest an association, or present an important adverse reaction.
  • Reviews - comprehensive, authoritative descriptions of any subject within the scope of Nutrition Journal; these articles are usually written by opinion leaders who have been invited by the board.

Peer review policies

  • Each manuscript submitted to Nutrition Journal will be assigned to one or two external reviewers for peer-review, which is normally completed in 2 to 8 weeks. In deciding whether to accept or reject a manuscript, a reviewer asks him/herself whether the scientific community is better served by publishing or not publishing the manuscript. The suitability of a research article for publication in Nutrition Journal is assessed by peer reviewers, who base their decision primarily on the article's validity and coherence but who also consider its comprehensibility and level of interest to the reader. A maximum of 2 revisions can be made per manuscript.
  • To promote dialogue in the field, Nutrition Journal invites authors and readers to post comments on published articles.
  • Nutrition Journal operates an 'open peer review' policy meaning reviewers are asked to sign their reviews. The pre-publication history including all submitted versions, reviewers' reports and authors' responses will be linked to from the published article.

Publishing in Nutrition Journal

All articles are listed in PubMed immediately upon acceptance (after peer review), and are covered by PubMed Central, MEDLINE, Thomson Reuters (ISI), Agricola, CAS, CABI, Embase, FSTA and Current Contents.

Articles in Nutrition Journal should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. However, because articles in this journal are not printed, they do not have page numbers. Instead, they have a unique article number.

The following citation:

Nutr J 2004, 2:1

refers to article 1 from volume 2 of the journal.

As an online journal, Nutrition Journal does not have issue numbers. Each volume corresponds to a calendar year.

Submission of manuscripts

General journal policies

Nutrition Journal is published by BioMed Central, an independent publisher committed to ensuring peer-reviewed biomedical research is open access. That means it is freely and universally accessible online, it is archived in at least one internationally recognised free access repository, and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone to reproduce or disseminate articles, according to the BioMed Central copyright and licence agreement. Nutrition Journal however, has taken this further by making all its content open access.

Nutrition Journal's articles are archived in PubMed Central, the US National Library of Medicine's full-text repository of life science literature, and also at INIST in France and in e-Depot, the National Library of the Netherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications. The journal is also participating in the British Library's e-journals pilot project, and plans to deposit copies of all articles with the British Library.

Nutrition Journal is able to deliver summaries of frequently updated content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds.
